{May 27, 2021} Arnold, MO –Nelia, a second grade virtual student at Sherwood Elementary, wrote a persuasive letter to McDonald’s about making Happy Meals for puppies. McDonald’s liked Nelia’s persuasive essay so much that they wanted to make her persuasive letter a reality.

Chris Giarla, owner of the Arnold, MO McDonald's restaurants read the letter and decided to make puppy treats for Nelia and her classmates and bring them all Happy Meals to eat as a special treat.

“Every year, second grade writes a persuasive letter as part of the ELA curriculum”, said Jessica Meeks, Sherwood Elementary principal. Usually, students write to me asking for more recess or no homework, but Nelia definitely took this project in a different direction. This was definitely a great experience for these virtual students to end the year with.”

“This experience was great for the whole class,” said Gretchen Meyer, the second grade virtual teacher at Sherwood Elementary. “But especially for Nelia who really found her voice throughout this process and learned  that her voice matters and that she can have a big impact on her entire community.”

Chris Giarla, the owner of the Arnold McDonald's restaurant, was impressed with Nelia’s initiative and ideas. “Last week I was in the restaurant and was presented with Nelia’s letter. I instantly knew that I had to meet and congratulate her,” he said.
